Why is the fire department implementing these fees?
The fees imposed by the fire department are in response to the Common Council’s decision to control property tax increases for the City of La Crosse. Through a combination of reducing city expenditures and charging for certain services the council is balancing the needs for services and the costs for such services.

No, all city departments were instructed to identify potential fees and submit them to the Common Council for approval.

Recreational fire pit permits may be filled out at Fire Station #1 or at the City Hall Treasurer's office.

Is a permit application the same as the permit?
No, the application only obtains the necessary information in order to issue the permit to the permit holder.

Can I pay for the permit at the fire station?
Yes, if it is by check, and only at Station #1. If paying by cash the permits must be paid for at the City Treasurer’s Office located in City Hall at 400 La Crosse Street after an invoice has been generated.

Where do I find the rule and regulations for recreational fires?
When you are issued your permit you will receive a copy of the ordinance concerning recreational fires. The recreational fire rules and regulations can be found under the
Municipal Code 7.01

Do I need to keep the permit?
Yes, you should have your permit readily available in the event the fire department is called to your residence for a reported fire. Fire Department personnel will ask you for your permit.

Just because I have a permit does that mean I never have to worry about my recreational fire?
No, the burning rules and regulations are very specific regarding your recreational fire. If the smoke from your recreational fire is causing issues for your neighbors the fire department can extinguish your recreational fire even though you have a permit. In extreme cases you may be subject to a fine for illegal burning depending on your actions.
