Symptoms in Children
If you are living with violence, be alert for any of the following symptoms in your children:
Physical Symptoms
Sleep disorders
Body aches
Nervousness
Neglect of personal hygiene
Some children may be injured by an abuser while trying to intervene to stop the abuse
Behavior Problems
Low self-esteem
Chemical use
Running away
Pre-delinquent behavior
Acting out or becoming withdrawn
Being an underachiever or an overachiever
Becoming overly passive or aggressive
Some children may respond to violence in the home by becoming excessive "caretakers" of the parent who is being assaulted.
Some children may develop suicidal tendencies.
Social Symptoms
Becoming distrustful
Poor conflict resolution skills
Poor social skills
Difficulty making friends
Children living with domestic violence often feel:
Responsible for the violence
Constant anxiety
Guilt for not stopping the violence
Grief
Fear they will be physically hurt
Fear of abandonment
Confused
Ashamed/embarrassed
Angry
Worried about the future
It is important to recognize the effect that violence in your home may be having on your children. If you think your children need help coping, you can contact one of the following agencies to have your questions answered and get advice and information. Calls can be anonymous--
