Please join us for the Grand Opening of 2219 Lofts on Wednesday, January 18, 2017 from 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at 2219 South Avenue in La Crosse for a historic tour and open house. This 24-unit affordable housing apartment building is a historic renovation of the Bakalars factory/Historic Armory building. It is in part funded by the City of La Crosse’s Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and HOME Investment Partnership (HOME).

To help meet the growing need for workforce housing, MetroPlains LLC and Enterprise Community Investment renovated the historic building that had sat vacant since 2013. The City of La Crosse was able to leverage $500,000 in a CDBG/HOME loan to help the project attract approximately $5 million in WHEDA LIHTC tax credits, federal and state historic tax credits, and private investment.

This housing provides one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments and is conveniently located near jobs, schools, transit and health care. Rent will range from $329 to $866. Six of the units are reserved for formerly homeless families, who are back on their feet but now need affordable housing. Residents will also enjoy shared amenities such as a community room, computer room and exercise room.

This historic building was originally built in 1903 as part of the Gund Brewery campus. It also served as the National Guard Armory and is now designated a historic site by the National Park Service. Most recently, it was the Bakalars Sausage Company factory.
