RE:                 Mayor introduces wheel tax legislation

Mayor Tim Kabat will introduce legislation for consideration by the La Crosse Common Council in September – An Ordinance to create Article IV of Chapter 42 of the Code of Ordinances of the City of La Crosse establishing a motor vehicle registration fee.

The motor vehicle registration fee – otherwise known as a local wheel tax – is proposed at $25 per vehicle.  The proposed legislation also sunsets the wheel tax after five (5) years.  The reason for the sunset, according to Mayor Kabat, is to provide enough time for the City to continue our efforts at getting caught up on our local street repairs and to acknowledge that the State of Wisconsin will be addressing transportation funding this upcoming legislative session and will most likely impact local efforts like the wheel tax.

Two (2) public information sessions are scheduled for the purpose of providing opportunities for La Crosse citizen’s to learn more about the City’s street repair needs and why we would consider a wheel tax and to offer their input and feedback.

Public information sessions will be held on Monday, August 27th from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Thursday, August 30th from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. both in the La Crosse Common Council Chambers, 1st Floor of City Hall, 400 La Crosse Street.  All are invited.

In addition, the public hearing on the proposed legislation will be held on Tuesday, September 4th at 6:00 p.m. at the City’s regular Judiciary and Administration Committee meeting, Common Council Chambers, 1st Floor City Hall.
