K-9 Brutus

Handler:  Officer Casey Rossman

Sworn:  January 19, 2010

Retired:  March 15, 2017

Specialization:  Narcotics Detection, Tracking & Apprehension, Protection

On January 19, 2010, the La Crosse Police Department swore in our third canine, K-9 Brutus.  Brutus is an AKC German Shepard from Germany.   Because he was originally raised and trained in Germany, Brutus takes his commands in German!

Besides offering advanced narcotics detection, tracking, and apprehension skills, Brutus also helped us to connect with our citizens, local area businesses, and organizations, through demonstrations and attendance at community events.  Officer Rossman and K-9 Brutus spent most of their time on 3rd Shift Patrol.  They were certified annually by the United States Police Canine Association (USPCA).

On March 15, 2017, due to significant health issues, K-9 Brutus retired as a La Crosse Police K-9.  For the next several months, Officer Rossman and his family gave Brutus the best life possible.  At one point, Gunnar's Wheels Foundation donated a doggy wheelchair to help Brutus get around!  Unfortunately, Brutus' health issues worsened, and he passed away on August 15, 2017.
