All Abilities Trane Park is an inclusive park designed for those with cognitive, sensory and physical challenges of all ages and allows everyone to have a place to play! All Abilities Trane Park is located at 15th and Chase Streets and opened in June of 2021 with colorful play areas and synthetic ground coverings allowing for wheelchair use and soft landings. This fully fenced park has separate sections for different sensory experiences. The accessible and inclusive park is part of a new trend to allow children and adults of all abilities to play side by side.
The vision for this park began 10 years ago with parents who organized as the La Crosse Area Autism Foundation. They wanted a safe play space for their children. Working with the Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department, public input meetings and fundraising began in 2016, and ground was broken for the innovative park in October of 2018. With the support of many community partners, the dream of an all inclusive play space has become a reality.
The City of La Crosse acquired the Trane All Abilities Park land in 1907. Originally called the 21st Ward Playfield, it was renamed Trane Park by the La Crosse City Council in 1952. Rueben and Helen Trane gave a generous gift to refurbish the park, which is located near Trane Company’s Plant #1. Trane Park was upgraded in 1952 to include softball and football fields, tennis courts and a wading pool. Playground equipment and a shelter were later added. Trane Park was in need of updating when the inclusive play space was proposed and developed. This destination park is fast becoming a community favorite!
