Department News

Road to Lower Hixon Forest Closed - End of Quarry Road

Quarry Road, from Milson Court to Hixon Forest main trailhead will be closed beginning 2/18/2026 until further notice. This road is closed annually during the freeze/thaw cycle due to its increased vulnerability to damage. The road will be reopened when it is suitable to resume vehicular traffic. Trail maps with identified parking locations can be found here.

The City of La Crosse continues to encourage trail users to be mindful of soft and muddy trail conditions as weather continues to fluctuate. To help protect our trails and natural areas, we ask users to consider these guidelines:

  • Think before you sink – If you leave footprints or tire tracks, the trail is too soft to use, and it’s time to turn back.
  • Stay on Paved – Use sidewalks and paved trails until natural surface trails become firm and stable again. A list of paved trails can be found here.
  • Be Patient – Allow time for trails to properly dry before resuming normal use.

Your consideration helps maintain the integrity of trails for all users, ensuring they remain safe and enjoyable throughout the year. Thank you for your stewardship and respect for our outdoor spaces.
