Wisconsin Public Television’s Garden & Landscape Expo is a mid-winter oasis for people ready to venture out and dig their hands in the dirt.  Now in its 27th year, this three-day event celebrates the latest trends in gardening and landscaping.  Lunch will be on your own at the Garden Expo.  We will be at the expo from 12:00pm-5:00pm.  Things to do at the Garden Expo include: learn something new at one of more than 150 free educational seminars and stage demonstrations; visit with hundreds of businesses, independent contractors, nonprofits and artists to share ideas and learn about the newest in gardening, landscaping and local foods; purchase seeds, tools and everything else you need to be ready when the trees bud and the ground thaws.  We will return to La Crosse at approximately 7:30pm.  *Bus Pick-Up:  SSNC: 9:00am   Sam’s Club: 9:15am

SUMMIT AVE WALKING TOUR

Take a 90-minute walking tour of the Summit Avenue neighborhood, named one of America's "Great Streets."  The tour highlights the Gilded Age mansions that line the elite avenue and the people who owned them and built them.  Guides will talk about the architecture, social history and current preservation issues of the historic neighborhood.  The tour starts at the James J. Hill House and covers 1.5 miles.  After the walking tour, lunch will be at the St. Paul Hotel, which is included in the price.  We will end the day with a tour of the James J. Hill House.  Explore upstairs and downstairs life in Minnesota's Downtown Abbey — a 36,000-square-foot mansion built for railroad titan James J. Hill.  Learn about James J. Take a memorable, seven-mile, 55-minute round-trip train ride on a former branch line of the Chicago & North Western Railway nestled in a valley between the Baraboo Hills in rural Sauk County.  Passengers ride in restored steel coaches built a century ago.  An authentically-attired conductor will call “all aboard!” before the train leaves from a historic wooden depot, built in 1894.  Their Coach Shed is filled with restored wooden passenger cars, freight cars and displays from the turn of the century.  Built in less than a year in 1915 in Baraboo, WI, the Al Ringling Theatre was a gift for the city from the eldest of the famous Ringling Brothers.  The elaborate 16,325 square foot, oval-shaped theater is adorned with ornate features such a domed ceiling with a cloud painting, a series of historic murals, velvet draperies and a rare fire curtain with a hand-painted mural.  We will have a guided tour of this spectacular theater.  Lunch is on your own in Baraboo.  We will return to La Crosse at approximately 6:00pm.  *Bus Pick-Up:  SSNC: 8:00am   Sam’s Club: 8:15am

Join us for a spring shopping tour of the largest garden centers in the Twin Cities.  You can go behind the scenes at Bachman's flagship store on Lyndale Avenue in south Minneapolis, on the original site of the Bachman Family Farm.  This floral, gift, and garden center has over 200,000 square feet of retail space and features a gift and home décor shop, exquisite fresh flowers, a wonderful array of green and blooming plants, seasonal and holiday accents, garden plants, trees and shrubs, and lawn and garden products.  During your tour of Bachman's on Lyndale, you will learn about the local history and how they process approximately 400 incoming orders every day, and up to 800 orders on busy days!  You will also visit the design areas where their talented floral and plant designers create bouquets, centerpieces, and designer plant baskets for sale in the store or for delivery in their signature purple trucks.  Other sights include floral coolers, the delivery garage and order processing center, the indoor and outdoor greenhouses, and gift and home décor areas.  Lunch will be on your own at Patrick’s Bakery and Café in Bachman’s.  Our second stop will be at Gerten’s Garden Center to shop.  During the summer of 1996, Gerten’s began an expansion project to increase their retail store to more than 40,000 square feet.  With the widest selection of annuals, perennials and nursery stock in the Twin Cities, Gerten’s is only one of a handful of garden centers that grows the majority of the goods they sell, making your entire experience unlike any other.  After all, it is only natural to buy from the grower!  We will return to  La Crosse at approximately 6:30pm.  *Bus Pick-Up:  SSNC: 7:00am   Sam’s Club: 7:15am
