Chief Inspector Says City is Committed to Building Permit Transparency

Published on July 10, 2026

LA CROSSE, WI — The City of La Crosse issued today a reminder to La Crosse residents that per Municipal Code Section 103-34, building permits are required for most construction, including but not limited to, interior remodels, new buildings, additions, and accessory structures. As of January 1, 2026, window/door replacements and re-siding are among the projects that require a permit city-wide.

“We strive to be transparent and forthcoming about construction requirements because we are committed to serving and supporting our community,” said Chief Building Inspector David Reinhart. “Property owners in the floodplain must be doubly vigilant as almost any type of remodel and maintenance work in that area requires a permit.”

Chief Building Inspector Reinhart underscored that the health and safety of residents was a top priority. Floodplains are heavily regulated by the state and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), requiring the City to adopt strict regulations. The City participates in FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program to allow property owners access to subsidized flood insurance.
