The Street Department is responsible for a variety of tasks related to maintaining the City's streets: repairing potholes, snow & ice control, traffic lights, painting crosswalks, and more.
Our Municipal Service Center is comprised of our City’s central supply office and maintenance shop, and our mechanics are responsible for the maintenance and repair of all City vehicles & mechanical equipment.

City Wide Street Painting

Starting Sunday night, May 17th, 2026, Fahrner Asphalt Sealers LLC, will begin repainting centerlines, lane lines, bike lanes, and intersection marking throughout the City. The painting work will be performed at night.

A branch fell off of a boulevard tree, who should I report it to?
Parks, Recreation & Forestry Dept maintains boulevard trees. You can reach them at (608) 789-7533. Issues with trees on private property, are the responsibility of the parcel owner.
The storm or sewer drain is plugged, who do I call?
If a drain is plugged by debris, such as snow or leaves, contact the La Crosse Utilities, 608-789-7536. They can best direct you to the Stormwater or Sewer Utility.
Who is working on my street or boulevard?
A variety of different companies or departments could be working on your roadway, parking lane, boulevard, or alley. Typically, all work is required to have a permit, and most permits are applied for through the Engineering Department.
Are they working on your water or sewer line? Then contact the Water or Wastewater Utilities. Are they working on an underground cable then it may be a private contractor. Is there a road construction project nearby? It may be a contractor doing work for the Engineering Department or Utilities. Are they cutting down trees on the boulevard? It may be Parks and Forestry Dept or a contractor clearing power lines.
Road reconstruction projects are typically managed by an engineer in the Engineering Department. You can call them about permits or street projects at (608) 789-7505, option 3 for permits, or option 0 for customer service.
Who is picking up my brush or leaves?
The Refuse & Recycling Department handle questions related to brush collection, leaf collection, or the yard waste services in general. They can be reached at (608) 789-7508, option 4.
Who do I contact if I need traffic control materials for an event?
Depending on a few factors, you may need to file a Block Party Permit or Event Application with the Clerk's Office or request a Street Privilege Permit through the Engineering Department.
