Library Services Continue on the North Side This Summer

Published on June 18, 2026

Following changes to library facilities on the north side, the La Crosse Public Library is excited to continue serving north side families through an expanded schedule of outreach programs, neighborhood events, and convenient library services throughout the summer. "Our commitment to the north side community remains strong," said Library Director Dawn Wacek. "Libraries are about people, not just buildings, and we're excited to meet families where they are this summer, and going forward, through storytimes, pop-up libraries, community partnerships, and new ways to access library materials."

Throughout June and July, library staff will bring books, activities, and programming directly into neighborhoods across the north side and throughout La Crosse. Find more information about upcoming summer programming for kids and families at the library's website.

Weekly Storytimes at Fire Station #4

Families can join library staff for free outdoor storytimes at Fire Station #4 on the following Tuesdays: June 9, June 16, June 23, June 30, July 7, July 14, July 21, and July 28. Storytimes provide opportunities for children and caregivers to enjoy books, songs, and early literacy activities in a familiar neighborhood setting.

Northside Story Stop Pop-Up Library

The library's Northside Story Stop will bring books and activities directly to Northside Elementary School from noon to 1 p.m. on Thursdays, June 18, June 25, July 2, July 9, July 16, July 23, and July 30. Children can browse books, sign up for the Summer Library Program, check out materials, and participate in fun activities.

Neighborhood Library Connect Events

Library staff will also be bringing services into neighborhoods through the Neighborhood Library Connect initiative:

  • June 20, 11:30 a.m. – Hunger Task Force Kane Street Garden Storytime
  • June 27, 11:30 a.m. – Hunger Task Force Kane Street Garden Storytime
  • July 1, 5:30 p.m. – Wittenberg Dog Park Playground (Grover Neighborhood)

These events will connect families with books, games, literacy activities, and community resources in neighborhood gathering spaces.

Family Fun and Materials Returns at Black River Beach

On July 2, from 5:30-6:30 p.m., families can join the library for Bingo at the Beach at the Black River Beach Community Center. This family-friendly event combines games, prizes, and opportunities to connect with library staff.

The library is also pleased to announce that a new library materials return drop box will soon be installed at the Black River Beach Community Center, making it even easier for north side residents to return library materials close to home.

Partnerships Throughout the Community

In addition to these scheduled events, library staff will continue regular outreach visits throughout the summer, including partnerships with the Schuh-Mullen Boys & Girls Club and numerous community organizations in locations across La Crosse.

Expanded Main Library Hours Beginning August 15

To increase access to library services, the Main Street Library will expand its hours beginning August 15:

  • Monday–Thursday: 9 a.m.–8 p.m.
  • Friday: 9 a.m.–5 p.m.
  • Saturday: 9 a.m.–5 p.m.
  • Sunday: 1 p.m.–5 p.m.

The expanded schedule will provide more opportunities for residents throughout the community to access library collections, technology, meeting spaces, programs, and staff assistance. "We know how important library services are to families, students, and lifelong learners," said Wacek. "This summer is about staying connected, building relationships, and making sure library services remain accessible throughout our community."
