LA CROSSE, WI — Mayor Shaundel Washington-Spivey will issue a proclamation at 9 a.m. tomorrow, October 1, at City Hall to recognize the month of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
“Preventing domestic violence requires the collective voice and power of individuals, families, institutions, and systems,” the Mayor stated. “As the City, we are committed to increasing public awareness of domestic violence and sending a clear message to abusers that domestic violence is not tolerated in La Crosse.”
New Horizons Shelter & Outreach Centers, the event’s organizer, has declared this year’s message, “With Survivors, Always.” According to the organization, it is a commitment to believing survivors, listening without judgment, respecting their choices, and standing alongside them through crisis, safety, healing, and rebuilding.
Tomorrow’s proclamation will be followed by the unveiling of the Clothesline Project in the City Hall lobby. The project uses decorated T-shirts to share the stories, experiences, and messages of those affected by domestic violence.
New Horizons will host several events and activities this month. For more information, please visit: https://www.nhagainstabuse.org/events.
