Grand Crossing Trail to partially close March 9 for rebuild & repair project.

The City of La Crosse Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department will facilitate the temporary closure of the Grand Crossing Trail beginning March 9, 2026, as part of a two-phase construction project aimed at improving long-term trail resiliency and user experience.

Phase 1 of construction will begin Monday, March 9, 2026, and include closure of the Grand Crossing Trail from East Avenue to the intersection of the Cottonwood Trail. During this time, the spillway will be reconstructed and reinforced to help reduce the frequency and duration of closures caused by high water events. Trail users may continue to commute through the area by utilizing the Cottonwood Trail as a detour.

Upon completion of Phase 1, Phase 2 will involve a full closure of the Grand Crossing Trail from River Valley Drive to East Avenue to accommodate trail repaving. An updated press release outlining the timeline, detour routes, and additional details for Phase 2 will be shared closer to that portion of construction.

This project is funded in part by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation through the Transportation Alternatives Program, which provided grant dollars to support reconstruction of the trail. The overall goal of the project is to lessen closure times due to spillway washouts following high water events and to enhance the overall trail experience.

For updates on construction progress and trail closures, users are encouraged to visit the City of La Crosse Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department website at cityoflacrosse.org/parks or contact the department directly.
