Update: Arrest made in Overnight Stabbing

On May 15, 2026, at approximately 11:22 p.m., La Crosse Police were dispatched to assist First Responders in the 1100 block of 16th Street South. Upon arrival, officers found a victim with multiple stab wounds. The victim was transported to a local hospital, where they remain for medical care due to their injuries.

Through the investigation, law enforcement identified a suspect, Ivan Canchola-Garcia (02/07/1998). It was believed after the incident, he left La Crosse and possibly traveled out of state. On Saturday, May 16, 2026, Mr. Canchola-Garcia was located by law enforcement and taken into custody in Whitestown, Indiana on outstanding warrants from Dane County Wisconsin. The La Crosse Police Department is working with the La Crosse County District Attorney’s Office to obtain an arrest warrant for the charges of 1st Degree Intentional Homicide-Attempted.

Charges: 1st Degree Intentional Homicide-Attempted 940.01 / 939.32

Mr. Canchola-Garcia is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

This remains an active and ongoing investigation.
