Highway 16 Water Pipe Installation Will Begin Soon

Published on April 27, 2026

The City of La Crosse Water Utility will install 2.2 miles of water piping between Gillette Street and Losey Boulevard, adjacent to the Highway 16 roadway.

This project is expected to begin upon approval and will be completed by the end of October.

Travel lanes on Highway 16 during daytime hours are not expected to be impacted while the project is being completed, but the nighttime hours may see some closures. During the following high traffic events, travel lanes will remain open all day and night:

  • UW-La Crosse Move In & Out
  • WIAA State Track & Field Championships
  • NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships
  • Oktoberfest

Addressing water supply lost from wells impacted by PFAS, the project will improve water system resiliency and water quality by delivering water from south of the La Crosse River and the City reservoir to the northern and western parts of La Crosse.
