Your household recycling is picked up every other week on the day indicated by the boundary lines on the pickup schedule (see drop-down to left). Cart(s) need to be placed out by 5 AM on your day of collection and should be returned to the storage location within 24-hrs of collection.
There is no collection on these holidays shown in red on the calendar:
- New Year's Day - January 1st
- Memorial Day - May 25th
- Fourth of July - July 4th
- Labor Day - September 7th
- Thanksgiving Day - November 26th
- Christmas Day - December 25th
All collections following these holidays will be a day late. If the holiday falls on a Saturday or a Sunday your collection day is NOT affected.
Recycling Guidelines - PDF Link
The City of La Crosse uses the ‘Single Stream’ recycling system. This means all recyclable items can be placed loosely in the cart together. Do not bag, bundle, or separate items.
Acceptable Recyclables:
Plastics
Plastics ♳♴♷ (must be labeled as such)- Clamshells-including berry containers
- Tubs, bottles, jugs and Detergent containers
Paper
Newspapers, Inserts, Magazines, Pressed Paper, Office Paper, & Cardboard
- Books (hard covers must be removed and discarded before recycling)
- Cereal, cracker, and snack boxes (not the plastic inserts)
- Soda boxes, beverage cartons, and paper towel rolls
- Toothpaste, soap, and detergent boxes
- Mail, receipts, and envelopes-including those with windows
- Cards and gift wrap (no tissue or foil wrapping paper)
- Egg cartons and corrugated cardboard
Wax Style Cartons - Food & Beverage
- Milk cartons (dairy, soy, almond)
- Juice, soup, broth, & wine cartons
Metal
Aluminum, Tin, Steel, and Copper Wire
- Aluminum, tin, and steel cans, caps, and lids (labels are okay)
- Empty aerosol and paint cans (detach clean lids and recycle separately)
- Aluminum foil, plates, and containers
- Pots, pans, and wire clothes hangers
- Christmas lights, extension cords, electrical wiring (no coaxial cable)
Glass
Glass Jars & Bottles
- Jars and bottles of any color (no other glass items)
Preparing Recyclables:
- Empty, rinse, and dry containers
- Plastic bottle and juice box lids should be reattached after rinsing
- Do NOT bag recyclables when placing in City-service cart
- Using the Single-Stream Recycling system means all recyclable items are placed loosely in the cart together
- Paper bags, newspaper, and office papers should be thrown loosely into the recycling cart unbundled
- Break down cardboard and pressed paper boxes to make room in your recycling cart
- If you have yard waste, construction material, hazardous material, appliance, electronic, or anything that does not fall into the category of recyclable, please dispose of it according to our ‘Disposal Guide’ or ‘What Goes Where’ widget
DO NOT RECYCLE
- Plastics #3, 4, 6 ,7
- Soiled materials such as paper plates or pizza boxes (tops of pizza boxes can be cut off and recycled if not soiled)
- Food waste
- Medical waste
- Yard waste
- Styrofoam (free drop-off is available at Hilltopper Refuse & Recycling and 7 Rivers Recycling, please call 608-783-6727)
- Packing peanuts or Bubble wrap
- Shredded paper
- Plastic bags or wrap
- Ceramics or dishware
- Windows or mirrors
- Photographs

- Tempered glass
- Plastic shopping bags should be returned to stores that recycle them
Common Reasons for Missed Collection
- Recycling is bagged and not placed loose in the cart.
- Cart is not placed correctly facing out, 3ft of clearance around cart
- Material is overflowing or is outside of the cart
- Lid is not closed to a substantial degree
- Cart is placed on a snowbank
- Contains unacceptable items such as yard waste, electronics, refuse, etc.
