Mayor Says Public Spaces Are Available to Keep Residents Cool

LA CROSSE, WI — In a statement released today, July 14, La Crosse Mayor Shaundel Washington-Spivey advised city residents to prioritize safety throughout the summer months.

“I urge our community to exercise caution during exceptionally hot days by utilizing air-conditioned public spaces, including but not limited to, the Main Library, community centers, and the City Hall lobby,” he wrote. “Splash pads, public pools, and local beaches are also available to cool off.”

The Mayor shared that he works collaboratively with the City’s Fire Department that serves as the Emergency Response Team, as well as the National Weather Service. Emergency centers would only be activated in cases where cool public facilities may no longer be accessible, such as during widespread power outages, a natural disaster, or a city-wide hazard.

“We are proud that under most circumstances, our public spaces adequately serve the people of La Crosse and we are committed to preserving these spaces for everyone who calls this city home,” he remarked.

He encouraged the community to stay hydrated, limit excessive exposure to the sun during peak afternoon hours, and check on their most vulnerable neighbors, including young children, older adults, and the chronically ill.
