LA CROSSE, WI — In a joint statement released today, October 2, Mayor Shaundel Washington-Spivey and Police Chief Shawn Kudron offered their deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of yesterday’s shooting victim.

“Our community is heartbroken as we mourn the tragic and senseless loss of a young life cut short by this unimaginable tragedy,” the Mayor said. “Gun violence is not and will never be tolerated in the city of La Crosse.”

Police Chief Kudron echoed the Mayor’s sentiments. “This act of violence impacts our entire community,” he said. “Our police department is working tirelessly to keep residents safe. I have full confidence in our officers and investigators as they remain committed to serving and protecting this city.”

The Mayor said that violence will not define La Crosse. “We are more than yesterday’s tragedy,” he reminded. “We are a community filled with love, care, goodwill, and compassion. That is who we are and that’s who we have always been. Let us stand together against all acts of violence and keep our neighborhoods safe.”

Mayor Shaundel and Police Chief Kudron also underscored the importance of youth programs and initiatives, as well as supporting the efforts of the La Crosse School District and non-profit organizations. They said that a collective effort among community members, agencies, organizations, and systems creates opportunities to engage young people through the arts, culture, career and technical training, and other positive outlets.

For those struggling with loss, the Mayor advised seeking resources and support through La Crosse County (https://bit.ly/472P3Wq) or other local organizations.
