Published on September 05, 2026

On the morning of September 5, 2026, at approximately 6:06 a.m. the La Crosse Fire Department responded to 318 Main Street for a report of an alarm sounding and an odor of smoke in the building. Responding personnel arrived within minutes of the alarm and found an eight-story commercial and residential building with smoke showing on the alley side of the building.

Firefighters initiated coordinated efforts to extinguish the fire, search the property and evacuated residents that were in harm's way. Fire units from multiple stations throughout the city responded to the emergency and the incident was quickly brought under control.  No injuries were reported.

The cause of this morning's fire is suspicious and is being investigated by La Crosse Fire and Police investigators.

The La Crosse Fire Department would like to thank our partners who assisted in this morning's response: La Crosse County Emergency Dispatch, La Crosse Police Department, Tri-State Ambulance and XCEL Energy.
