LA CROSSE, WI — La Crosse Utilities today issued a public notice educating residents on how to prevent frozen pipes during the upcoming winter season.

“Mindfulness and preparedness are key to avoiding costly property damage, especially when residents or business owners are away for a prolonged period,” said Water Superintendent Derek Greebon.

The notice outlined three key prevention steps:

  • Run cold water from an indoor faucet to protect exterior and interior pipes.
  • Maintain adequate heat and insulation throughout the property.
  • Keep the thermostat at 55°F or higher during extended vacations.

If pipes freeze, the utility company suggests using a hair dryer or portable space heater on the frosted pipes, whether located before or after the meter.

For detailed tips and recommendations, please read the full notice. For more information, contact the La Crosse Utilities Business Office at (608) 789-7536 or utilities@cityoflacrosse.org.
