Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get a patch?

The La Crosse Fire Department receives a considerable number of requests for our department patches from patch collectors, former firefighters, and fire department enthusiasts worldwide. Unfortunately, the high volume of requests makes it challenging for us to provide patches free of charge. The La Crosse Fire Department does not give away or sell department t-shirts or coins.

However, we’re pleased to offer a solution. With a $10 donation to help offset the costs, we will gladly fulfill requests from individuals interested in adding the La Crosse Fire Department embroidered patch to their collection.

To request your patch, please follow these simple steps:

  1. Write Your Request: Draft a written request including your name, mailing address, and the number of patches you’d like to receive.
  2. Include Your Donation: Along with your written request, enclose a check made payable to the City Treasurer for the total amount ($10 per patch requested).
  3. Mail Your Request:  Send your written request and donation to the following address:

La Crosse Fire Department
Attn: Patch Requests
1400 La Crosse Street
La Crosse, WI 54601

Please ensure the accuracy of your mailing address to avoid any delays in processing your request.

Thank you for your support and interest in the La Crosse Fire Department. Your donation not only helps us cover expenses but also contributes to our ongoing mission of serving and protecting our community.

Can I request a tour?

As part of its fire education and fire prevention efforts, we welcome groups or individuals to tour a fire station. Fill out our online form to request a tour, or please contact the Battalion Chief at 608-789-7263 at least a week in advance.

Please note:

Certain events may occur that will force a delay to the start of a tour or cancel it altogether. Firefighters also may have to cut short a visit in order to respond to an emergency. These events include, but are not limited to: emergency fire or medical response, impending severe weather, or unexpected personnel shortage. If any of these events occur and if they interfere with your scheduled visit, we will take steps to reschedule your group with highest priority.

Can you fill my swimming pool?

We do not offer this service within the City of La Crosse.

Do you perform car seat checks?

We do not. To see who does, please check out the website below:

Safe Kids Wisconsin

Do you take care of fire hydrants?

Fire hydrants are installed and maintained by the La Crosse Water Utility. The water utility directly charges customers for Public Fire Protection (PFP) to pay for the production, storage, transmission, sale, and delivery of water for public fire protection purposes. The PFP charge is billed quarterly as a fixed charge based on the size of the water meter. This money is not available to the fire department or used to pay for any service provided by the fire department.

What kind of donations do you accept?

Vehicles for extrication training.

If looking to assist a family who suffered from a fire, please inquire with the American Red Cross.

We do not accept stuffed animals, clothing, home goods, hygiene products, etc.

Why did a fire truck and an ambulance respond to my call?

All fire engines are equipped with oxygen, defibrillators, and basic medical supplies; the firefighters are trained to deliver emergency medical care prior to the arrival of the ambulance. Many times the engines arrive minutes before the ambulance. The firefighters also assist the paramedics in lifting and moving patients from the basement or second story of the home to the ambulance.

Why do firefighters take the fire trucks to the grocery store?

The firefighters are working a 48-hour shift and purchase their own food or pool their money together for a meal. The units are always available to respond when they're at the grocery store. In addition, it gives newer firefighters the opportunity to drive the apparatus in non-emergency conditions, preparing themselves for the promotion to driver/operator.
