Victim and Witness Rights

The La Crosse Police Department has created a Victim/Witness Rights and Advocacy brochure that is handed out to all victims and witnesses. The brochure includes important information such as:

  • Important contacts
  • Local victim advocacy services
  • Wisconsin's statewide Victim Information and Notification Everyday (VINE) system
  • Dealing with the media
  • Victim rights which may apply at any time, after the offender has been charged, during proceedings, during sentencing, and after sentencing

The Constitution of the State of Wisconsin under Article I. Section 9m and WI State Statute Chapter 950 give special rights to victims of crime. Some rights are automatic, while others must be requested. The WI Department of Justice Office of Crime Victim Services can provide you with information about victim rights as well as victim services in our area. Call (800) 446-6564 or visit the Office of Crime Victim Services website.

If you are a victim of Domestic Abuse, you may contact a Domestic Abuse victim service provider to help plan for your safety and take steps to protect yourself, including filing a petition under WI State Statute 813.12 for a Domestic Abuse Injunction or under WI State Statute 813.125 for a Harassment Injunction.

If you need to provide the La Crosse Police Department with a statement on a current case, submit a victim/witness statement online.
