Permits

Permits are required for any use or work on the public right­-of-way. Occupying or alteration of this shall comply with the permits, which are issued by the Engineering Department.

The public right-of-way includes public streets, the boulevard area adjacent to a public street and the public sidewalk adjacent to a public street.

Dumpster or Portable Container Permit

  • Required to place a dumpster or portable storage container within the City's Right of Way.
  • Average completion time for validation is 5 days
  • $75 for a 14-day permit
  • $500 if no permit applied for

Sidewalk Boulevard Sign Permit

Businesses that wish to place a sign on the sidewalk or boulevard in front of their establishment may apply for a Sidewalk Boulevard Sign permit. 

Single Trip (Oversize Load or Building Moving) Permit

Single Trip Permits are issues by the Wisconsin Department of movements on the state trunk highway system only; by the County Highway Commissioners for movement on county trunk highways in their respective counties; and by the officer in charge of maintenance streets in their respective jurisdictions.

Weights and Measures Permit

Any person or business doing Commerce within the City of La Crosse by weight, measure, or use of a scanning device is required to obtain a Weights and Measure Permit from the City. The City is responsible for the licensing of Weights and Measures customers and collection of licensing fees. The City coordinates this effort with the State inspector. The City contracts with the State of Wisconsin for Weights and Measure testing, certification, and complaint investigations. A State inspector visits businesses, inspecting and testing devices, and investigating complaints and violations. The annual license fees collected by the City are used to pay for the device testing, enforcement, and administration of the Weights and Measures program.

Revocable Occupancy / Street Permit (Long Term)

  • Average completion time for validation is 45days
  • You will be given notice when your request will be on the Board of Public Works agenda for consideration. Your presence might be required to discuss your application
  • $75 fee or as modified by City Council
  • All permits expire January 1 each year and must be renewed 

Communications Revocable Occupancy Permit
