Red Cloud Park

Red Cloud Park historical marker detailing the life and heroism of Corporal Mitchell Red Cloud Jr., a Winnebago descendant who received the Congressional Medal of Honor posthumously for his actions in Korea.

Red Cloud Park, formerly known as Indian Hill Park, was the site of the last Native American village in the area and belonged to the Winnebago nation. Development of the park began in the early 1950s, in 1953-54 the park was developed into a picnic area with a water fountain and playground also installed. In 1956, 3 and a half lots were acquired by the city to expand the park, and on May 10th the name of the park was changed to Red Cloud Park in honor of CPL Mitchell Red Cloud Jr.

CPL Mitchell Red Cloud Jr. was 25 years old when he was killed in action in Korea. His heroic actions allowed his company time to evacuate and regroup after an enemy attack. His mother, Mrs. Nellie Red Cloud, received the nation’s highest military honor, the Medal of Honor, posthumously for her son. In May of 1957, the park was officially dedicated, and a Wisconsin Historical Site marker was erected, stating the story of CPL Red Cloud, Jr. and additional history of the area from the 1800s.

In 1958, the shelter house was erected. In the early 1980s a series of upgrades were added to the park including the tennis courts, the linkage to the Rabbit Trail, and the fencing was replaced around the parking lot and driveway.
