Weigent Park

A view of a tennis court at Weigent Park, established in 1976, with a brick pathway in the foreground and lush greenery on either side.

Weigent Park is a large neighborhood park located at 16th and Cass Streets. It offers tennis courts, a playground, a softball field and plenty of open space. A playground program staffed by City employees is held here in the summer.

Weigent Park is at the original location of La Crosse Central High School, which was moved in 1967 when a new building was constructed. The old building was razed in 1972, the land was purchased by the City and the new park was completed in 1977.

The Park is named in honor of Walter ‘Babe’ Weigent (1904-1972) an outstanding multisport student athlete at Central High who returned in 1933 to coach for 17 years. During his tenure at Central he coached football, basketball, golf and tennis. He was also the director of the City’s softball program for 25 years. In 1950 he continued his career as the first athletic director at Central High School until his retirement in 1970.

A sculpture of Walter ‘Babe’ Weigent, created by Mike Martino, was dedicated on July 7, 2017. This project was coordinated by Carl Miller, a Central High School Alumnus.
